Here are a few stories we've been following this month.
Scamming in Detroit
Scams may account for 1 in 10 evictions in Detroit, according to housing advocates and lawyers. Many fall prey to "fake landlords," paying rent and often believing they own their property in rent-to-own cases. Many get locked out or kicked out after the real owners find out. This in-depth report tells victims stories and explores what can be done about the problem. Outlier Media/NBC News
Big Boy land up for sale
The Platform bought the former Big Boy at the corner of East Jefferson and East Grand Boulevard in 2017, with hopes to build an apartment tower. The restaurant was demolished, and the land has sat there for the past few years. It's now up for sale, so someone who can use it sooner can buy it. The property sits right across from Belle Isle. The Platform works mainly in the New Center area, with a few properties in Old Redford, Eastern Market, and Woodward West under construction in Midtown. Crain's Detroit
Next steps for Cooley High School
Last week, Life Remodeled publicly announced big plans for the vacant Cooley High School. The $37.5 million project would turn the property into a mixed-use community center with various sports, mental health, and education programs. But the property isn't for sale yet. The Detroit Public School Community District will discuss plans for its properties early next year. The Ladies Entrepreneur Empowerment Circle also pitched their idea to the school board for the property, which would include offices for their group and more community programs. The school has been closed since in 2010. WDET
