One of the most popular outdoor spots in Detroit has landed on top of a Readers Choice poll -- again. The Detroit Riverwalk was named the Best Riverwalk in 2022 by USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, an honor it also won last year.
Editors chose 20 of the top riverwalks in the country; the top ten included trails in Milwaukee, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Louisville, and more. The public voted from these selections.
“We are thrilled to be voted number one for the second year in a row,” said Matt Cullen, board chairman of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. “This is going to be a big year for us as we break ground on new projects, mark the completion of our East Riverfront vision and make plans for our 20-year anniversary in 2023, so it is incredibly rewarding to be able to celebrate the Best Riverwalk honor during this special year.”
The Riverwalk runs along the Detroit River, currently completed from the Riverfront Towers to Mt. Elliot Park, and beyond Belle Isle into Gabriel Richard Park. The extension to Belle Isle will soon be finished, and work will start soon on the Ralph C. Wilson Centennial Park along the West Riverfront. Eventually, it will link up with the Ambassador Bridge and run a full 5.5 miles. The Riverwalk has about 3.5 million visitors annually.
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy also recently broke ground on the Southwest Greenway, which will link the riverfront to Michigan Central.
