Construction to start on Woodward through Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge

Work starts on Monday, October 17 on a major road diet project in Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge. Expect lane closures on Woodward from 8 Mile to 696 as construction starts on a project that will bring fewer lanes for cars, but safer access for pedestrians and those on bikes. 

The work starting this month includes pavement repairs, curb replacement and sidewalk upgrades. It will wrap up in November. Work will start up again in April 2023 with additional sidewalk upgrades, drainage improvements, resurfacing on M-1 (Woodward), installation of bike lanes, and signal work. 

The project will bring Woodward down to three lanes each way instead of four, with a parking lane protecting a bike lane. It will also create safer ADA crossings, bus islands, and shorten the distance for pedestrians to cross.  

The project is funded through MDOT, the City of Ferndale, the City of Pleasant Ridge, a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant, and Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. The project should be wrapped up next September.
