Atheneum Hotel now a Historic Hotel of America

Greektown's Atheneum Hotel has been given a special historic honor. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named it a Historic Hotel of America.

It's one of over 300 hotels in the program, which recognizes preserving and maintaining historical integrity, architecture, and ambiance.

The building dates back about 100 years. It was part of the Ferry Seed Company and designed by George Mason. The original Ferry Seed warehouse burned in the late 1800s, and new structures were built in its place. The site became the Atheneum Hotel in the early 1990s. Its original concrete columns have been preserved and are part of its design. It underwent a renovation earlier this year.

“Historic Hotels of America is delighted to induct the Atheneum Suite Hotel, formally a Victorian, commercial-style warehouse built in the 1920s and converted into a hotel space in 1992,” said Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Vice President of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. “We commend the Atheneum Suite Hotel’s ownership and leadership team for their careful historic preservation work, stewardship and vision.”
