Here are a few stories we're reading as we head into the holiday.
New (used) trains for the People Mover?
Earlier this week, we learned the People Mover will be free in 2024. It looks like the Detroit Transportation Company, which runs the People Mover, could be buying some defunct train cars from Toronto. At last week's board meeting, the board approved $1 million to purchase "various surplus assets" from the Toronto Transit Commission. Ernest Latham, the deputy manager of the Detroit Transportation Company, told CTV News Toronto: "Our transit agency is of the same vintage as the Scarborough line. So you guys have a lot of assets that we could use for train parts, long lead time items that we would have to go out to tender for, smaller parts, large ATC sub-assemblies and vehicles themselves. A lot of these parts would transfer readily over to our system here in Detroit." CP 24 News
New Detroit to Airport Bus service coming next year
We love to see more positive transit news. After last week's Regional Transit Authority (RTA) board meeting, the RTA posted that they have a vendor for a new bus line from Detroit to the Airport, and will pilot the program before the NFL Draft in April. They'll hold a public meeting in January. The service will have 16 round trips each day, and range around $12-15.(And ICYMI the RTA will likely take over the Qline next year) RTA on Twitter/X
City Club Apartment tower for sale
A large, renovated apartment building is up for sale in Elmwood Park. City Club has listed its tower on Detroit's east side for sale for $35 million, citing it doesn't fit in with their brand. The 18-story building was listed through the Jonna Group. City Club has additional properties in the city, including the newer City Club Apartments CBD. They announced plans a couple years ago for a large mixed-use development on Woodward and Mack, which would be home to the urban Target, but ground has yet to break on that development.
