The long-awaited Detroit People's Food Co-op (DPFC) will soon welcome shoppers. The grocery store opens its doors on May 1.
The co-op currently has 2,500 members, but non-members are welcome to shop as well. Anyone over 21 and living in Michigan can become a member.
“Come see the result of Detroit’s diverse community coming together to envision and create a much needed solution for everyone,” said Lanay Gilbert-Williams, board president of the DPFC. “There is no business in Detroit that has over 2,500 owners from various neighborhoods across the city and state.”
The building, the Detroit Food Commons, sits at the corner of Woodward and Euclid, in a centrally located spot in Detroit's North End. The first floor holds the co-op, while the second is home to four commercial kitchens and a hall available to rent. The Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network will run workshops, community events, and more in the space to promote health and wellness among the community.
“Our customers are members of our community who we are honored to welcome into our thoughtfully friendly and inclusive environment that is centered on fresh locally grown produce from Detroit farmers,” said Akil Talley, general manager of the DPFC. “We are excited to officially open our doors to our well-stocked grocery store, and offer the best prepared foods department in the state of Michigan.”
The community is welcome to come to the Grand Opening of the Detroit Food Commons on May 18 at 11:00 a.m. The Detroit People's Food Co-op opens at 11:00 a.m. May 1, with regular hours running from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day.
