Here are a few of the stories we've been reading lately.

Lakeside Mall closing and coming down

In Sterling Heights, Lakeside Mall will close for good on July 1. It will eventually be demolished to make way for a $1 billion mixed-use development, announced in late 2022, with 2,800 residential units, plus hotel, office, and retail space.

"Lakeside Mall's closure marks the beginning of an exciting transformation," Allison Greenfield, principal and chief development officer of Lionheart Capital, the parent company of Miami-based mall owner Out of the Box Ventures LLC, said in a press release. "We are committed to collaborating with the city of Sterling Heights to create a vibrant urban center that celebrates the area's unique character and history."

Yes, we still need regional transit

While the NFL Draft was a big success for the city and region, it highlighted a problem we know all too well - a cohesive transportation system. The Qline was packed during the three days, taking riders up and down Woodward. The People Mover saw more riders than it has in over a decade. Our bus systems gave the suburbs options for parking and riding. Some parking lot owners downtown were charging $100 during the Draft. There has to be a better way, right? An OpEd in the Detroit Free Press points to areas of opportunity in the systems and how it can help as we hope to see more visitors in the near future.

Detroit Monopoly...which landmarks should make it into the game?

A new version of Detroit Monopoly is set to debut this upcoming winter. What Detroit spots should be included in the game?

“Detroit is such a unique community with a rich history. We aim to ensure that Monopoly: Detroit Edition accurately portrays what Detroit locals and tourists love about this charming city,” said Top Trumps representative Tim Barney in a press release announcing the call for entries.

Ideas for businesses or landmarks that should be included? You can submit them here. We'd start with Michigan Central, the Fisher Building, the Motown Museum, Belle Isle, the DIA, the RenCen, and the upcoming Hudson's Detroit (maybe for Boardwalk?). Detroit News
