This week, the U.S. Census Bureau released updated population numbers, and Detroit saw something it hasn't seen in a very long time - an increase.
According to the report, the city's population increased by 1,852 residents, bringing the total population up to 633,366. It's the first reported increase since 1957.
For many years, Mayor Mike Duggan has disputed Census numbers, which have shown Detroit's population decreasing, although they've decreased by much less than in previous decades.
"We have known for some time that Detroit's population has been growing, but this is the first time the US Census Bureau has confirmed it in its official estimate," said Mayor Mike Duggan, who has maintained that the one true measure of success would be whether more people were moving into the city than out of it. “This day is for the Detroiters who stayed and for everyone who has put in the hard work to make Detroit a great place to live."
Detroit is now #26 in population in America, above Portland and below Boston.
