Following the recent groundbreaking of the Reckmeyer Residences, Bedrock today announced more details on their redevelopment of the neighboring building. The Belle will be a mixed-use development along a very busy Broadway St. downtown.

The former Harvard Square Center will house 42 apartments along with 8,000 square feet of retail and residential. The Belle will offer studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedroom apartments. 20% will be listed at 80% Area Median Income.

Kraemer Design Group is the lead architect for the project, while Roncetti is the general contractor and Pophouse leads design.

"The legendary Paradise Valley has always been a staple of Detroit's entertainment scene,” said Kofi Bonner, Bedrock’s chief executive officer. “Bedrock's meticulous restoration of The Belle complements development efforts to bring modern and affordable living amenities to the Broadway Corridor."

It's scheduled to be complete in 2026. The whole street will look different at that time. The Reckmeyer Residences, led by Basco, will see historic facades in front, with a new nine-story residential building behind them. And on the corner of Grand River, Method Development is redeveloping the Merchants Building into a hotel.

It's a city block that hasn't seen much work until recently, and in the coming years, should transform the section of downtown completely.

The area is generally called Paradise Valley, with cultural and dining spots on the other side of the block at Randolph and Centre. A few blocks away across Gratiot, the Exchange opened in 2023, with 153 new apartments and 12 condos. And in the other direction, the Hudson's site has gone up, which will bring office, event, residential and hotel space to a once-empty block downtown.
