Here are a few of the stories we're reading this week.

More money for the Joe Louis Greenway

Connections keep growing along the Joe Louis Greenway. Last week, the city was awarded a $10.5 million federal grant for a pathway between Woodward and Dequindre (near McNichols). When completed, the Greenway will run 27.5 miles through Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, with a little part of Dearborn. It's made up of pathways that are already complete and other pieces of land that need to be built out. Detroit News

And more planning for the I-75 cap

We could see a cap (or multiple caps) along I-75 in downtown Detroit in the upcoming years, which would better connect Midtown and Brush Park to downtown. The I-75 project received another $2 million for the project last week, part of a larger federal grant throughout the state. WILX

Herman Kiefer update

One of the larger development projects in the city that seems fairly stalled is the Herman Kiefer project. It includes numerous buildings on a 40-acre former hospital site. Ron Castellano purchased the property in 2015 and an agreement was made with the city in 2018. The city believes more should have been done with the property by now, and Castellano says work has progressed and they're on track to complete it in 2028. The goal is to make the campus an innovation site and a place to create jobs. The developer says that there has been a huge cleanup effort at the site, along with abatement and maintenance plans. Castellano has also rehabbed many homes in the Virginia Park neighborhood. The developer has six months to either meet obligations in the development agreement or give the property back to the city. The property sits west of the Lodge in the Virginia Park neighborhood, just north of the Future of Health project in New Center, which will bring a new hospital, medical research center, and residential to the area.
