Here are a few of the stories we're reading this week.
Boblo terminal coming down
The long-planned demolition of the 10-story Boblo Dock building is underway. Crews were working on the east side of the building last week. Although owned by the Detroit Port Authority, they have an operation and maintenance contract with the Ambassador Port Co., owned by the Moroun family. The Albert Khan-designed building opened in 1926 and has been vacant for decades. Recently, the area near it has been used to dock very large cruise ships, as it's the only place along the Detroit riverfront deep enough for them. Crain's Detroit Business Historic Detroit
Downtown Detroit has plenty of places to park
A new study reveals what should come as a surprise to no one - that 30% of Detroit's land downtown is dedicated to parking. A map from the Parking Reform Network shows the areas within the Lodge, 1-75, and 375; it does not include the areas just north surrounding the Little Caesars Arena. The report says that this kind of land use limits the areas for development, while de-incentivizing public transportation. Detroit doesn't have the highest percentage of parking, though. That honor goes to Arlington, Texas. Axios Detroit
The Hurlbut Eagle lands again
A cool little piece of history is back in place on Detroit's east side. The Hurlbut Memorial Gate in front of Water Works Park is a beautiful piece of history dating back to the 1800s along Jefferson Avenue. The eagle on top of the gate was damaged by lightning in 2018; it's been restored and was placed back on the gate last week. Daily Detroit was there to talk about the restoration, the facility, and the installation of the eagle. The gate stands in front of what's now the water treatment plant. In the late 1800s, early 1900s, it led into the magnificent 110-acre Water Works Park.
