Grand Prix organizers announced today that the race is coming back to downtown Detroit in 2023. Detroit City Council approved the plan earlier this month. It's scheduled for the weekend of June 2-4 2023.
The 1.7-mile route will run along Jefferson Avenue, Atwater, Bates, St. Antoine, Franklin, and Rivard, with 10 turns in the race. Fans can watch for free from many places along the track, including Hart Plaza and the Riverwalk. These areas will be activated with entertainment throughout the weekend as well.
Officials say that it won't disrupt traffic in the city too much, as the track will not be on any street north of Jefferson.
Organizers say the race will be a boost to the downtown economy, with so many people expected to shop, eat, and stay downtown.
“We are very excited to bring the Grand Prix back to Downtown Detroit beginning in 2023,” said Bud Denker, Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. “Bringing this annual international event back to the streets of Detroit will help our businesses Downtown, will shine a light on our beautiful Riverfront with an inclusive summertime festival and it will open up new opportunities to engage and connect with our local neighborhoods and communities.”
The Grand Prix ran downtown from 1982-91, then switched to Belle Isle, where it's taken place since (aside from some years when it didn't happen at all). The Grand Prix will take place again on Belle Isle from June 3-5 2022. Many people have opposed holding the race on the island, noting especially the extensive set-up times during the prime spring months when residents want to enjoy the park.
