Updated parking app launches

Over the holidays, the city updated its parking app, ParkDetroit. But instead of just updating the original, users have to first delete the old app and download the new one. The new app shows available spaces for street parking, locates and allows the user to pay garage and lot parking, find parking by event or venue, and compare prices between lot, street, and garages. But already the app is showing its issues (difficult to navigate, not user friendly), and the city is planning on upgrades based on the early feedback. Additional upgrades are expected in phases through the year, including multi-modal transportation options and a merchant discount program. Have you used the new app yet? Toronto by train via tunnel

Amtrak announced last week its partnership with Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Railways. For Detroit, that means a passenger train to Windsor and Toronto via the Detroit River Tunnel, behind Michigan Central Station. There's not a timeline in place yet. Amtrak is also planning to upgrade its station in New Center, with added customer amenities, a more user-friendly layout, and additional modes of transportation.

Scaled back bus service

SMART announced this weekend that as much as 25% of their service is currently being scaled back due to COVID and limited bus drivers. The agency says they are down about 80 drivers right now, and are making adjustments to schedules and cutting trips altogether. Riders are required to wear masks, and SMART asks that riders stay home if they're feeling sick. Riders should check the transit app for updated times.
