Construction is officially underway on one of the biggest projects in Detroit. Destination: Grand, the new $2.2 billion hospital tower from Henry Ford Health, broke ground today on West Grand Boulevard. It's expected to be completed in 2029.
Destination: Grand will cover over 1.2 million square feet, with a 20-story tower and a 75,000-square-foot emergency room. Three floors will be dedicated to the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, thanks in part to a $130 million donation from the Gilbert Family Foundation.
The Gilbert Family Foundation also has a $10 million fund for residents who have limited or no insurance for the Ability Lab.
The hospital will have five floors of ICU rooms, 28 new operating rooms, and 432 individual patient rooms.
“What we’re doing isn’t just a transformation of space,” said Dr. Steven Kalkanis, Executive Vice President, CEO, Henry Ford Hospital and CEO, Henry Ford Medical Group. “It’s a transformation of place, of potential and of impact. I believe every major American city needs a premier academic medical campus, and this will put Detroit on the global map as a destination for the most complex care provided by the most talented medical minds in the business.”
An additional 185,000-square-foot shared services building will be next to the new hospital, with the kitchen, loading dock, processing, and Central Energy Hub.
Destination: Grand is part of a larger development project that involves Michigan State University and the Detroit Pistons. A new MSU medical research center is under construction across the Lodge freeway from the hospital, and residential and retail is planned for the surrounding areas.
