A new build in southwest Detroit will bring 39 apartments to the neighborhood. The city broke ground this week on Campbell Street Apartments, along Michigan Avenue in Chadsey-Condon.
MiSide Community Impact Network is leading the $18 million development. 20 apartments will be offered to those making up to 40% area median income (AMI), and the rest will be for those making up to 60% AMI. The development secured project-based vouchers with MSHDA, meaning residents will not have to pay more than 30% of their income on rent.
The development also has on-site and off-site gated parking for residents. A second phase of the project will bring 40 more apartments to the formerly vacant site.
MiSide also owns the neighboring building, which is home to many non-profits that help the residents of the neighborhood.
"The Campbell Street Apartments housing development is a beacon of positivity for the East Chadsey-Condon neighborhood and its development allows us to directly impact the community we've called home for decades by providing those living here with direct access to our crucial supportive services, "said Sean de Four, President and CEO of MiSide Community Impact Network. "We're delighted for the opportunity to work alongside the City of Detroit to bring more affordable housing options to the region."
The project was funded through a variety of loans through MSHDA and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, as well as a $1.35 million grant from Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) for site clean-up.
The city encourages residents to use the Home Connect site to find affordable housing options, both available and under construction, in Detroit.
