Starting this morning, I-94 between the Lodge and I-75 will be closed for about a week so MDOT can place the new bridge connecting Second Avenue.
Eastbound ramps just west of Warren to Chrysler Drive will be closed, while westbound ramps from Mt. Elliott to Trumbull will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted along I-75, the Lodge, and I-96.
The new Second Avenue Bridge is nearly as big as a football field and weighs about 5 million pounds. It's the first network tied arch bridge built in Michigan. The cables cross from the top of the arch to the bottom of the driving surface on both sides of the structure.
It's being moved with self-propelled modular transporters, or multi-axled rolling platforms. The actual driving surface will be built on the skeleton of the bridge when it's in place.
When completed, the bridge will have one car lane in each direction, plus nine-foot-wide sidewalks, eight-foot-wide bike lanes, plus LED architectural lighting and landscaping. It will open this fall.
