Last week, officials gathered to mark the start of construction at the Henry Street Apartments. The renovation will include 170 apartments, a community center, and parking to Cass Corridor.
Seven buildings are a part of the project - six residential and one community center. 49% of the units will be offered to those making between 30-60% Area Median Income. The first building is expected to be completed in 2026.
Residents will have private parking and green space. The community center will offer a fitness center, a business center, pet wash, meeting space, and more.
The $80 million project is led by Olympia Development and Cinnaire Solutions.
“This isn’t just any project. It is partnership and vision at its finest and wouldn’t have been possible without Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the City of Detroit, MSF and all the other critical partners represented here today,” said Cinnaire President Mark McDaniel. “One of the features that makes this development especially unique is the Ralston Commons, a community where residents can gather to receive services, to celebrate and to engage.”
Funding was also secured from the American Rescue Plan Act from the city and state, Low Income Housing Tax Credits, HOME funds, and loans from Comerica Bank and Bank of America.
Olympia had planned to demolish the buildings in 2017. But community members protested, and a historic district was created to save the buildings.
