A handsome brick 95-year-old apartment building in Detroit's Jefferson Chalmers is open once again. City officials celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Marlborough, which had been vacant for 40 years. One of the two buildings is complete, offering affordable and market-rate apartments to the east side.
The buildings will have 23 apartments ranging between 656-931 square feet. 13 units will be offered at rates for those making between 50-60% Area Median Income.
East Jefferson Development Corporation (EJDevCo) purchased the Marlborough buildings in 2018. The $7.1 million project had assistance from the City of Detroit’s Housing & Revitalization Department, Twain Financial, Enterprise Community Loan Fund, the Kresge Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.
This is part of the city's Strategic Neighborhood Fund, which brings targeted improvements to neighborhoods throughout Detroit. Other recent improvements to Jefferson Chalmers include a new community resource hub, streetscaping, and upgrades to the neighborhood parks.
The second building should be completed in October.
